New to Yoga?

What is Yoga?

Yoga, a Sanskrit term, that means to “join” or “bind” together is estimated to be roughly 6,000 - 7,000 years old.  Originating from both India and Hindu cultures yoga is known throughout the world as peaceful form of exercise and meditation.  Yoga relaxes the body, but can also challenge it.  Yoga allows students to learn how their body works and how we are all build differently.  A weekly yoga routine will show benefits like increased energy, glowing skin, general sense of well being, relaxation and many other wonderful benefits.

What should I wear to yoga class?

Wear whatever you consider to be comfortable clothing ie. sweatpants, spandex etc...No shoes or socks.  Jeans are not the ideal attire.  However, no one will be turned away for their taste in clothing.

What should I expect during my first class?

Beginners should arrive a few minutes early and speak with the instructor.  Please inform your instructor of any areas that need particular focus.  Ask any questions or concerns before or even during the class.  The average class lasts approximately one hour.  Some classes are more intense physically than others.  In class the instructor will guide the students through a series of postures and explain the benefits along the way.  There can also breathing exercises, mediation and relaxation.

What is studio/class etiquette?
Show up to class on time or better yet be early. Advise the instructor of any health issues you may have. Avoid eating large meals at least one hour before class. Be mindful of your fellow yogi’s space. Bring a towel. Refrain from wearing scented perfumes, colognes or oils. Abstain from smoking prior to class. Wear comfortable clothing.

What if I am not flexible?

Yoga is for you then!  Remember though, yoga is not a contest to see who can stretch the furthest.  Go easy and at your own rate.  When you need to, just rest on your mat.
